Financial incentives

The Government remains fully committed through logistical support and financial incentives to generating income and publicity from productions filming in Malta. The key point of contact with the Government is the Malta Film Commission (under the Ministry of Tourism) which is based at the Malta Film Facilities. The Commission is often the first point of contact a production will have in Malta (we hope the second is Pineapple!)   The current Film Commissioner Engelbert Grech is vastly respected and adopts and uses a can do attitude. The full team is also very knowledgable and very responsive to requests of information.

The Government offers eligible productions which are at least partially shot in Malta the possibility of up to 25% in Cash Rebates with a further 2% (up to 27%) for featuring Malta culturally.

Feature films, documentaries, TV series, and animation projects are eligible for benefits.   Eligible expenditure is not capped on below the line expenses while above the line expenditure is capped at €200,000.

There are a number of criteria which apply to the full percentage of Rebate, including a cultural test and a condition that Malta is featured in a favourable light.  A Rebate of 32% will be applied in the case of co-productions considered tricky.
